If you are a parent of a young child with developmental delay or concerns, you have probably heard the name Thriving Kids. Here is what we actually know.

What it is

Thriving Kids is a new program of foundational supports for children, delivered outside individual NDIS plans. It was confirmed by National Cabinet in January 2026 as part of the broader disability reform package. The goal is earlier, easier help for children through mainstream settings like health services, early childhood education and community programs.

Key dates

  • 1 October 2026: Thriving Kids begins rolling out
  • 1 January 2028: full implementation
  • 1 January 2028: changes to NDIS access linked to Thriving Kids begin

What it means for your child

Nothing changes overnight. Children with current NDIS plans keep their supports under existing rules. Over time, more children with developmental concerns are expected to get help through Thriving Kids rather than individual NDIS plans, with the NDIS remaining for children with higher and more permanent support needs.

What parents can do now

Keep your child's reports, assessments and progress notes organised in one place. Stay connected with your early childhood partner or paediatrician. Be wary of anyone telling you to rush decisions out of fear. The detail of the program is still being designed and official channels will publish updates.
