How to Choose a Support Worker You Actually Click With

By Allied Purple Network

  • NDIS
  • support workers

The right support worker changes everything. The wrong one makes support feel like a chore. Here is how to find the right fit.

Start with what you want

Before meeting anyone, write down what good support looks like for you. Practical help? Company at the footy? Someone who speaks your language or shares your culture? Someone calm and quiet, or upbeat and chatty? There is no wrong answer, but knowing yours makes choosing easier.

Questions to ask at a meet and greet

  • What experience do you have with people like me?
  • What do you enjoy doing outside work? Shared interests make community outings far better
  • Do you hold an NDIS Worker Screening Check, first aid, and a Working with Children Check if relevant?
  • Are you insured, and who do I contact if something goes wrong?

Red flags

Pressure to sign quickly, vague answers about checks and insurance, no written service agreement, or talking over you and at your family instead of to you. Trust your gut. Choice and control is the whole point of the NDIS.

Try before you commit

Ask for a trial shift or a short first booking. After it, ask yourself one question: do I feel more capable and more myself around this person? If yes, you have found a keeper. If not, you are allowed to keep looking, and a good provider will help you do exactly that.

Book a no obligation meet and greet with our team. We match workers to people, not just shifts to rosters.
